If you were collecting baseball cards back in the early 90s, you probably remember that Phil Plantier was one of the hot prospects of the era — right there with Jeff Bagwell and Frank Thomas and Todd Van Poppel.
Part of the appeal was that Plantier had developed prodigious power in the minors for the Red Sox, hitting 27 and 33 homers in 1989 and 1990, respectively. He was goint to light up Fenway Park.
He could also take a walk.
And then we got a look at Plantier’s batting stance, courtesy of his early baseball cards, and we saw how he got his free passes:
That 1992 Rookie Sensations card was one of 20 inserted in “jumbo” packs of 1992 Fleer cards. Once you saw this card, you’d never forget it.
I know I haven’t, and it’s still the first image that comes to mind when I hear Plantier’s name. Like today — his 55th birthday. Happy birthday, Phil Plantier!
For us collectors, it’s a fun card to kick off the weekend — “kick off” being an appropriate term since Plantier might well be dropping into his 3-point stance up there.
