Just a short weekend note to give you another dose of old-cardboard nostalgia, this one courtesy of Jerry Manuel’s 70th (!) birthday.
Behold, the 1982 Fleer Jerry Manuel (#195) baseball card …
This is one of those cards I probably touched and looked at a hundred times growing up but also one that didn’t make much of an impact on me. If anything, I might have conflated this pic with a young Dave Martinez — the Expos togs add to that effect.
It took years after Manuel stepped into the spotlight in 1998 as manager of the Chicago White Sox for me to realize this was the same guy. Same thing happened with Brad Mills a few years back.
Heck, even Manuel’s Manager of the Year award in 2000 didn’t get me searching for his old pasteboards.
Just goes to show that even “common” baseball cards you’ve glossed over for years might still hold some surprises and good times down the road.
So, happy birthday, Jerry Manuel!
Have a great weekend.

P.S. Tomorrow is Sunday, when I send out my normal weekly card-brain drippings. You might already be signed up for that one, but you can always find it on the main Wax Pack Gods Substack.
