I didn't know of him until well after his career, but Mark Fidrych seems like one of the great characters of baseball. I heard him tell a story of how to get hitters out and it was one of the funniest things I've ever heard. He started only 56 games, 29 of which were in his rookie season (24 complete games that year). Here's in 1978 Topps card:
